About the art

The guide’s illustrations are drawn in code from real data about the town. Photographs on individual place and visit pages carry their own credits.

Illustration: the real horizon from the Grove on Main Street, computed from elevation data: North Peak and the summit of Mount Diablo, then Eagle Peak, Black Point and Mount Zion to the right.
The ridge that closes every page: the horizon from the Grove.

Artwork is generated in code for Clayton.guide. The ridge is the real horizon from downtown Clayton, computed from elevation data, so North Peak reads a hair taller than the summit, as it does from town. The contour lines behind cards and page headers are Mount Diablo’s, and the streets, creeks and trails are © OpenStreetMap contributors. Town details are drawn only where research verifies them.

Illustration: a California quail, plume curled forward.
The plants and animals in the artwork are Clayton’s own, each on a sourced list: blue and valley oaks, poppies, the Mount Diablo fairy lantern, tarantulas in autumn, and this California quail.
