The Day

  1. Around 10 a.m.

    Relentless Grind Coffee Company

The Relentless Grind Coffee menu standing on the counter inside Roadside 22, a seasonal drinks sign beside it and beer taps behind.

A coffee counter inside Roadside 22, not a shop with its own door — worth knowing before you go looking for one. There’s a long counter, tables and booths, and a patio out front.

Take it slowly. There’s no rush to be anywhere.

Clayton Community Park is across town on Marsh Creek Road. Drive.

  2. Late morning

    Clayton Community Park

The big park, and the easiest hour of the day. Playground time is the point: there’s a play structure for the little ones and plenty of room to spread out a blanket. Let everyone run.

If you bring a ball, check posted rules and choose a permitted space clear of other visitors.

    Downtown is a short drive.

  3. Around 1 p.m.

    Ed's Mudville Grill

The corner spot on Center Street, and a good place to land with a hungry family — the menu sections are named after baseball, down to a Little Leaguer’s page for kids.

The San Diego Chicken is printed as a sandwich, so the wrap is something you ask for rather than find on the menu.

He regularly orders The San Diego Chicken as an off-menu wrap — ask for it that way. He also suggests the BBQ Brisket Sandwich, and sliders for the kids. And save room for a sweet stop later.

The Grove is in the downtown blocks near Ed’s.

  4. After lunch

    The Grove

The downtown park, and the right speed for the hour after a big lunch: a playground, a gazebo, picnic tables and game tables. The game tables are a good target — they’re there whatever the season.

There’s a splash pad that runs on a seasonal schedule. If it’s on, it’s a bonus and you’ll be glad of the spare clothes. If it isn’t, nothing about the afternoon changes.

Sip ’N Sweet is at 6200 Center Street, the same address as Ed’s.

  5. Around 3–4 p.m.

    Sip 'N Sweet

Family-owned, serving ice cream and coffee, with frozen yogurt made in-house.

The frozen-yogurt flavours rotate, and the shop posts the current list — worth a look before anyone commits.

His pick for the kids is a snow cone; he has bought them here himself. If you’re thinking about frozen yogurt, check the flavors before choosing.

  6. Home

That’s the day. It doesn’t need another stop.

If you have less time, or tired kids

Drop the first two stops and keep the downtown half.

  1. Ed's Mudville Grill
  2. The Grove
  3. Sip 'N Sweet

Ed’s and Sip ’N Sweet share 6200 Center Street, and The Grove is in the same downtown blocks. Around two hours, and it works just as well.
